T.J. Troy performs solo tabla, PremaSoul, and Classical Arabic Takht
PremaSoul: (Sheela Bringi, Clinton Patterson) fuses ancient Indian
melody with the soul of American music, transcending musical &
cultural boundaries with an intoxicating mix of pop harmonies, world
rhythms, & original and traditional songs in many languages.
T.J. Troy presents solo repertoire of the North Indian Tabla, in the
style of the Lucknowgharana. This performance will feature
traditional compositions, created distinctly for tabla solo,
including peshkar,palta theka, kaida, kaida-rela, rela, gat, tukra,
andchakradhar.
Classical Arabic Takht: Fahd Shaabad, T.J. Troy, Yvette Holzwarth, and
Chris Votek have formed an exciting new oud, riqq, violin, and cello
quartet especially to play this concert. The repertoire is classical
Arabic music, and
includes sama'i, longa, taqasim, and many instrumental songs. |
Balkan Folk Music and Jon Armstrong's music for bodies, electronics, and voice
Kate Conklin presents a program of inventively re-contextualized folk
tunes from the Balkans, complete with yodels, yips and thoroughly
crunchy harmonies. Featuring Bryan Landers, banjo, and Chris Votek,
cello.
Jon Armstrong will present his piece, "Epiphany of the Birds." Based
on a song written by poet/musician Billy Mark, the piece is arranged
for large ensemble, electronics, and voice. Armstrong will conduct
the ensemble using gestures and signs to create an improvised collage
of melodies that accompany the live poetry of Billy Mark.
Sarah Phillips will present a piece composed for small ensemble that
features a unique conducting style incorporating dance and hand
gestures. The specific movements correspond to different cues, or
instructions for the musicians.

masterworks that represent the most imaginative and innovative writing
for flute and piano. Featured on the program are Mauricio Kagel's
"Phantasiestuck" and Sergei Prokofiev's "Sonata." |
Jazz Quartet Slumgum unites with string quartet
Slumgum is a quartet that combines elements of jazz, free
improvisation, and contemporary classical music for a distinct and
unique voice as a band. In this concert they unite with a string
quartet to form an eclectic "double quartet" of improvisers. This
large ensemble will perform pieces written by all eight members. |
